Sudden Unexpected Infant Death Case Registry
Through its Sudden Unexpected Death in Infants Initiative the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have undertaken a number of activities to accomplish the following objectives:
- Standardize and improve data collected at death scene.
- Promote consistent classification and reporting of cause of death.
- Improve national reporting of SUID.
- Reduce SUID by using improved data to identify those at risk.
To accomplish these objectives, the CDC revised the Sudden Unexplained Infant Death Investigation Reporting Form (SUIDIRF), created a training curriculum and materials for individuals who investigate SUID deaths, and, in 2008, launched the CDC SUID Case Registry in partnership with the National Center for the Review and Prevention of Child Deaths. The Registry created a SUID module for the National Center’s Case Reporting System to gather additional and more detailed data about SUID deaths to improve public health surveillance information about SUID.
In 2009, CDC funded 5 pilot state CDR programs to utilize the new SUID module. Subsequently other states were added, and nine states now participate in the Registry. The National Center provides training and technical assistance to the states participating in the Registry. The results of the initiative are an increased knowledge of SUID deaths and thus of the prevention activities that should be implemented to prevent them.
The data in the SUID Case Registry has also been used by researchers to advance knowledge of how infants die in sleep and how to prevent their deaths.
